Created by Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory) and David Javerbaum (The Daily Show), Disjointed is a new Netflix original sitcom starring Kathy Bates (American Horror Story) as Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, the owner of a Californian marijuana dispensary.

As a “cannabis lawyer, activist, and user,” Ruth promotes the use of marijuana as a means of healing the sick, and takes pride in helping others to “medicate”. Other main characters include Travis (Aaron Moten) Ruth’s son and aspiring business partner, and Carter (Tone Bell) the somber security guard. A group of stoners in their twenties, Olivia (Elizabeth Alderfer), Jenny (Elizabeth Ho) and Pete (Dougie Baldwin) make up the stores “budtenders,” though it’s unclear what their roles in the store actually are at this stage.

Kathy Bates in Netflix's Disjointed

Unlike Netflix’s One Day at a Time reboot, a more traditional sitcom, this has to be the strangest sitcom I’ve ever seen. Because a laugh track is a sound I associate with family jokes and innuendo, there’s something quite disconcerting about the canned laughter when every joke is about weed, with a fair amount of unabashed swearing to go with it.

That’s not to say that Disjointed doesn’t contain the other important elements of a sitcom. Look out for family disputes, a blossoming romance, and over the top, cliched characters. There are also some unexpected but not necessarily unwanted cuts to very short skits, about marijuana too, of course, thrown in for good measure. Particularly interesting is Pete’s PTSD animation, which I really enjoyed.

I didn’t dislike Disjointed and I appreciated it’s effort to be unique, but I’m just not sure how funny it really is when every single joke is about being high. I’m sure that won’t get old come the next 19 episodes or anything.
