S01E01 ” The H Word”
It’s all been building up to this—Netflix’s Avengers-style team-up of Marvel heroes; Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones).
Having watched all the previous shows, I was less than impressed with what Iron Fist had to offer. But I just had to come back for this eight-episode showdown bringing everyone together, including, sigh, Iron Fist.
Frustratingly, this team-up isn’t happening anytime soon. Sure they’ve all made it back to New York, but by the end of the episode our respective characters still haven’t met up and are on their own individual journeys, which will likely lead to our big baddie of this season, Alexandra, played by none other than sci-fi queen, Sigourney Weaver. From this episode, we basically learn she is dying, and she’s working with Gao, the leader of the Hand (that is, that team of mystical ninjas).
Cinematically, this felt like an improvement on what they’ve done before. There are some interesting one shots, and not just in the fight scenes (which these Marvel shows are known for having). Matt Murdock (Cox) is back in the courtroom and the camera dizzyingly spins around him as he interrogates a witness on the stand, making what would be an otherwise stale scene, lively and frenetic.
Sure, this episode is reintroducing us to the key characters of each hero’s story (whoops, did I just use the H word?), which is helpful for newcomers, who might’ve skipped the four prior shows. For the rest of us, we had to wait long enough for The Avengers to come together, and we’ve been waiting for The Defenders since Daredevil aired in 2015.
If you’ve seen the prior Marvel-Netflix collaborations, you know what you’re in for. I just want to get to the good stuff already!
